Photography and Essay writing competition

Title: Lead Thy Thoughts
Objective: To understand and inculcate the value of leadership in the youth of today.
Methodology: intra-collegiate essay writing competition
Report: Under Value Lab activities, value for the month of January was ‘Leadership’. On 30th January 2021, an intra-collegiate essay writing competition on ‘Leadership’ was conducted. The essays were to be of 1000-1200 words and were scrutinized by Ms Vrushali Gupte and Dr Seema C, professors of from the departments of Philosophy and English respectively. The winners were given certificates and their achievements mentioned on the Instagram handles of Value Lab and English Association.

Outcome: The students wrote essays describing the qualities of leadership, thereby getting an understanding of what it means to be a true leader.
Title: Capturing Culture
Objective: To understand and appreciate Indian art and culture
Methodology: photography and captioning competition
Report: In collaboration with Cultural Association, English Association conducted a photography competition on 26th January 2021. The participants had to capture Indian art and culture and submit their entries along with suitable captions. Mr Prashin Jagger, a music photographer and Ms Janani Srinivas, a content writer, judged the contest. All the participants were given certificates and celebrated on the social media handle of Cultural Association.

Outcome: Students looked at cultural and traditional motifs with fresh eyes and learnt to appreciate our culture.

Talent Mania

The last and the grandest event ‘Talent Mania’ of the Cultural Association in the year 2020-21 was hosted on the 6th of March 2021. The event was exclusively organized for Freshers from across all departments of both Junior college and the Degree college of SIES ASC. The event provided a platform for the students to showcase their talents and thereby boost their self-confidence. Participants were asked to send in their talent showcasing videos which were then live-streamed on the official YouTube channel of the Cultural Association. This was then followed by the personality pageant round by the esteemed judges, Ms. Debasri Deb and Ms. Devi from our own faculty. Each of the five departments was represented by a mascot from the film industry and also promoted through movie dialogues, songs, etc. to engage other students during the entire event course. The event was hosted by Ms. Kavya Pillai, the cultural secretary, and had a turn in of a total of 38 participants of which 8 were shortlisted for the personality pageant round. Mr. Sparsh Korde and Ms. Priyasha Walia were awarded as Mr. And Ms. Talent Mania. The winners and participants were awarded E-certificates.

Title: Discover Your Calling- a 5 –Day symposium about Careers and Courses after TY
Objective: To give students an idea about the various careers options that are available to them after TYBA
Methodology: A 5 –Day online symposium
Report: From 16th February to 20th February 2021, one week, several educational talks on a wide array of professional fields were organised by the Association. A total of ten speakers guided the students on what courses and paths to take after graduation and motivated them to discover their true callings.

▪ The Second Speaker for the day was Dr. Mekhala Bawsay, a fashion and lifestyle influencer, entrepreneur and an MBA student currently nominated in the best fashion and lifestyle influencer of DGLITZ magazine.

Google forms were circulated among students and the event had a turn-out of a total of 42 participants. Mr. Prashin Jagger, photographer and filmmaker alongside Ms. Janani Srinivas, a student of communication and journalism were the judges for the event. On the 27th of January, the winners were announced wherein Ms. Resha Boricha and Ms. Neelmayee Khot were awarded 1st and 2nd prizes respectively. All the participants and winners were sent E-certificates via mail, the winners were also given a social media shoutout.

Dr Vidya Premkumar, a published poet and professor, rendered a lecture on ‘The Importance of Poetry in Current Times’ on 30th November 2020. She explained how poetry can become a form of solace for people and how it helps in facing mental health issues. Later, in the second part of the event, the results of the online poetry writing competition- ‘Courage in Adversity’ were declared. All the winners and the participants were given e-certificates. MIX Tape

The Cultural Association of SIES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce hosted their third online event ‘MIXtape’ in the month of November 2020. The event provided a platform for students of SIES College to showcase their musical taste and also creativity. Participants were asked to send in the audio tracks of their own mashup of a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 5 songs. They were also given a choice to perform solo or in a group with a time duration of 2 minutes. Registration forms were circulated online from the 1st of November, 2020. The competition was judged by Mr. Aditya Rajagopalan and Mr. Kishore Nadavdekar, the teaching staff of SIES College. A sum number of 33 members participated in the event and the top 10 performances were uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the Cultural Association. The performances of the top 3 winners Ashish Paul, followed by Dhrupadi Das and Aathira Pisharody were also featured on the Instagram page of the Cultural Association. The top 3 winners were declared from 9th – 11th of November and were also given E-Citations.

▪ Through the webinar we aimed to guide students on how they can utilize the current lockdown period to improve and polish their skills by making the best of all available resources.

Dancer to Performer

The Cultural Association of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce hosted their second event ‘Dancer to Performer’ for the year 2020 on the 25th of August. The event was an online dance workshop with the objective to train an individual and build within them the capability for a stage performance. Event flow and the PR strategies were planned in the committee meetings led by Ms. Kavya Pillai the Cultural Secretary and it was decided that the workshop would be conducted on the Zoom App. The sum total of twenty participants turned out for the event which was also attended by professors Ms. Devi Dinesh and Anoop Varghese. The workshop started at 2:00 pm led by Mr. Amit Damania from ‘Danzasters Academy’ and was conducted in 3 different parts. The participants were trained in a step-by-step manner and also their queries and requests were addressed at the end. Before concluding the meeting the Cultural Secretary thanked Mr. Amit Damania for his generous contribution and also announced the openings of the cultural clubs for the year 2020-21.

“Teach your Art” was the first event organized by the Cultural Association in the year 2020. It was an event for the students of SIES to showcase their creativity and artistic skills. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was hosted on an online platform. The event flow and PR strategies were discussed through online meetings led by Ms. Kavya Pillai the Cultural Secretary 2020-21, alongside the Joint Cultural Secretary and the Directors. The registration forms were circulated online and the event took place in two phases. The turnout of registrations for the event was 64 and the participants were asked to send in a picture of their artwork. For phase 1, 47 participants sent in their artworks. 15 participants were shortlisted for the second phase wherein they sent a video of themselves preparing the artwork. The judges Mr. Kishore Nadavdekar, an awardee of State, National, and International Awards, and Mr. Shubhankar Bhingare, an architect and a student of IIT Bombay judged the first and second phases of the event respectively. Ms. Krishna Nair was declared as the winner and Ms. Sakshi Kunjathur and Ms. Rucha Bhosale as the first and second runner ups respectively. The winners were announced on the 13th of July on the official Instagram page of the Cultural Association.
