Workshop: 'How to use SPSS for Data Analysis'

. To help them understand how to use SPSS, Department of Psychology organized a Workshop on Use of SPSS for Data Analysis on 10th March 2017. Resource person was Ms. Pradnya Khandeparkar, Head, Department of Statistics, SIES College, Sion (W). She taught students how to calculate correlation, regression, use SPSS to conduct t test and F test with some data.

On the occassion of Marathi Rajyabhasha Divas and to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Marathi litterateur and poet, Shri. Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar (Kusumagraj), the association organized a talk on ‘ Marathi Patrakarita-Shamata ani Sandhi’, by Mr. Sameer Karve, Assistant Sub-Editor, Maharashtra Times. He spoke on the relevance of language, its pragmatics and development in the field of journalism. He guided the students regarding how to pursue a career in media and how to improvise ones skills to be a part of this glamorous yet challenging world. Junior and Degree college students participated actively.

to help students understand Existential therapy, Psychology Association arranged screening of the movie ‘Life is Beaultiful’ on 22nd February 2017. This movie beautifully portrays how the protagonist in the movie, who is caught in concentration camp, gives meaning to the experience so that his son can cope with it. The elements of Existential Therapy were discussed in the light of the movie later.

‘Ananadyatri’, Mr. Prakash Patwardhan was invited to give a talk on his experiences pertaining to travel and tourism. The program’ Pravas- ek anandayatra’ was in the form of interview ,where the students asked Mr. Patwardhan questions related to the cultural norms, sights to visit, geographical landmarks, culinary highlights etc. of the places that he visited. He also showed the students photographs of the places, thereby generating a keenness to visit those places.

Organized a workshop on The Gita Jayanti Fest to observe 'Gita Jayanti, The Glory of the Celestial Song' in association with Aarsha Vidya Pitam. The workshop compromised of series of sessions by Swami Bhramavidananda and Swamini Bhramaprajnanada that re-opened the ancient wisdom of the Gita and juxtaposed it with our modern lifestyle and society. The workshop touched on important themes like self-knowledge, self-introspection, self-acceptance, the place of karma and dharma in an individual's life, etc. followed by audience Q and A.
NSS Residential Camp

7 Days NSS Residential camp was held at Kawthewadi. Several events were organised like seminar on streetplay, clean up drive, candle making, survey in farmer's suicide, teaching English, mathematics, etc. to children, self defence lessons, survey on gender justice and gender equality, shramdaan, seminar on higher education, wall painting in school, a session on the idea of beauty, etc. The camp was organized for the education andsensitization of Kawathewadi villagers. Around 160 Villagers including children were bebefited from the programme.

A Marathi cultural program ‘ Bhondla’ was conducted to help orient students with the traditional heritage of Maharashtra. Traditional ‘hadga’ songs and stories were told to the students by the staff members and students performed dance on the songs as well. More than 50 students participated.

Pulse Polio Drive - II

Under the college literary and fine arts festival, ‘ Utkaarsh- 2016-2017’ , the association organized ‘ Khel Shabdancha -one minute wisdom’ competition. The event comprised of on the spot, extempore elocution on a topic of current social relevance. Participants were given one minute to express themselves and were judged on different dimensions like presentation, voice modulation etc. 30 students from both junior and degree college participated. Ms. Geeta Paluskar (Faculty, Mathematics Department, Degree college) and Mr. Santosh Nar (Faculty, Mathematics Department, Junior college) were the judges. Rushika Jadhav( FYJC, Science) bagged the first prize whereas Janhvi Parab got the second prize.

The Mandal inaugurated its activities for the academic year with a poetry recitation event . Students presented poems on the theme of ‘rains/paaus’. The poems that they recited were either composed by them or were the compositions of famous Marathi poets. Students also enthusiastically presented songs and dance performances on the same theme. Around 50 students from junior and degree college and 10 staff members participated in the event.

Volunteers were briefed about tree plantations and were provided to Seed samples and compost. They were asked to produce small plant saplings using the provided seeds. Volunteers were taught the technique of sowing, potting & repotting. Volunteers produced 50 saplings.

A street-play was performed at Sion railway station to create awareness on the importance of trees plantations.
Awareness was created about importance and necessity of conservation of trees.
Tree Plantation Drive - Vanamohotsav Celebration

It was University event. Volunteers planted trees at Mahim Nature Park to celebrate Vanmahotsav organized by BMC.
25 plant saplings were planted by the volunteers.
Waste Collection and Segregation Drive

NSS unit collected and segregated plastic, metal and paper waste from college campus. The segregated waste was disposed of safely with the help of Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS).
College students were given the message about proper segregation and disposal of waste. Waste disposed is 306Kg.

Kawathewadi villagers were briefed about the importance of yoga in day to day life. They were also trained for the same by NSS unit.
Beneficiaries were around 100 including volunteers, teachers and Kawathewadi villagers.
Popular Science Lecture Series 2016-2017

Chemistry Association of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized a Popular Science Lecture Series on “Molecular Symmetry and Point Groups” delivered by Dr. Dimple Dutta, Scientific Officer (F), Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai on Saturday, 18th June 2016 at 8.30 am in Multimedia Room in collaboration with Indian Women Scientists' Association. 31 UG and 7 PG students of our college attended the lecture.
Hepatities B testing and Vaccination

The volunteers were tested and given vaccination for Hepatitis B by United Way Mumbai. 36 volunteers were checked and vaccinated.
Pulse Polio Drive - I

Polio doses were given to the children from the age of 0 to 5 at Sion, Matunga & Dadar Stations. NSS volunteers also went from door to door to give the polio doses.
More than 1000 children were benefitted from this drive.
Thalassemia seminar and check up

A seminar on Thalassemia was attended by the volunteers which gave them information about its symptoms and prevention. The seminar was followed by a Thalassemia check up. 56 volunteers were educated and checked up for Thalassemia.
Ambedkar Jayanti Celebration

Volunteers gave polio doses to children aged 0-5 years at Dadar railway station and Sion, Matunga, Dadar area. More than 1500 children were benefitted from this drive.
National Voters Day

On the occasion of National Voters Day the volunteers pledged to vote fearlessly without any biasness and to vote for the development of the nation. The volunteers took part in essay writing, poster making and slogan writing competition on the topic Voters ID awareness to celebrate the day. 32 volunteers participated in the programme and won prizes in various intra-colleagiate competitions.
AIDS Awareness Rally

United Way Mumbai Awareness Drive

The volunteers participated in the rally, organized by United Way Mumbai in the slums near Makawadi monorail station to make people aware about Hepatitis B and C.
