7th September 2024, Chemistry Department

During the pandemic in the year 2021-2022 department of Chemistry had given an option to all SYBSc and TYBSc Chemistry students to prepare a presentation on various topics of Chemistry on the basis of their application in advanced chemistry topics. They were given a choice to use any technical software to create their own video in the presentation as a presenter of the topic.

Environmental Awareness Week Celebration

12th June 2021, Botany Department

On Diamond Jubilee of the College, the Department of Botany celebrated ‘Environmental awareness week’ from 5th June to 12th June. Three competitions were held during environmental awareness week. • Essay writing competition: The participants were supposed to write essay on anyone topic from the three. 1000 – 1200 words were expected in essay. Topics for essay competition were My role in environment conservation, Impact of climate change on Himalayas, Impact of lockdown on environment. • Poster making competition: The participants were supposed to make a poster using their own creativity. For poster three topics were provided - Ecotourism and Urban forestry, Green energy resources, Mangrove ecosystem in India. • Quiz competition: The quiz competition was conducted through google form. Topic for quiz competition was We and our environment.

The Tattvam Philosophy Association organised an interactive session on Ms. Teams. The speaker shared his life experiences and insights about regional cinema, the struggles he faced and the opportunities he sought to portray the societal issues through his lens with an optimism to bring about a paradigm shift in the society on issues like casteism, reservation, mental health etc. Student participants engaged a meaningful conversation with the speaker, through the question and answer session of the event

One Day Sound Editing Workshop by Dr. Mangesh Karandikar

27th March 2021, Bachelor Of Mass Media(bmm) Department

Hands-on training through one day online Sound Editing workshop by Dr. Mangesh was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Mass media for BAMMC students on how to record sound, filter out the noise, change pitch, and add special effects and export to MP3 with 176 registrations as beneficiaries.

As a part of UTKARSHA, the academic Festival, History, Philosophy and Economics Department jointly organized a Workshop. This workshop was all about business/start up ideas and how to work on them. Mr. Prabhu Swaminathan – Founder of AFMOI, LAFORS Talent Solutions India Pvt. Ltd, g gave students, an insight into the corporate world. His ideologies, formulas for a successful start-up were very outstanding and knowledgeable.

Venture Synergia –One day workshop

Department of Philosophy, History and Economics cooperatively organized a digital workshop as part of the intra-collegiate Fest UTKARSHA 2021. This workshop was all about business/start up ideas and how to work on them. The workshop was conducted on MS. Teams. The resource person took over the workshop and gave an insight into the corporate world. He then proceeded with explaining the underlying principles. His way of giving examples and placing questions in front of the students was liked by everyone. Students enthusiastically answered his questions. The ‘Soft skills’ gave us an idea as to how creativity is the key to stand out and be unique. Moving ahead he threw light on ‘Mental blocks’ which are the barriers to be creative. His personal experiences added a special touch to the workshop. His ideologies, formulas for a successful start-up were very outstanding and knowledgeable. Essay Contest

30th January 2021, English Department

Under Value Lab activities, value for the month of January was ‘Leadership’. On 30th January 2021, an intra-collegiate essay writing competition on ‘Leadership’ was conducted. The essays were to be of 1000-1200 words and were scrutinized by Ms Vrushali Gupte and Dr Seema C, professors of Philosophy and English departments respectively. The winners were given certificates and their achievements mentioned on the Instagram handles of Value Lab and English Association.

To commemorate Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, The department of History and The department of Philosophy, jointly organized with the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra of Chinmaya Mission, Powai, 'Youth Arise Awake Session. The session was interactive and thought-provoking activities which highlighted the values of Swadharma, Karma and Ahimsa in everyday life. Mr. . Aravind Raghavan, Trainer in Chinmaya Yuva Kendra guided students on value, concepts and their relevance in life. The session also helped them to get an insight in to learning skills to better themselves in their life.

Title: Wordsworld- Poets Unite! Objective: To learn to appreciate poetry and the solace it gives in difficult times. Methodology: Guest lecture and poetry writing competition (online) Report: Dr Vidya Premkumar, a published poet and professor, rendered a lecture on ‘The Importance of Poetry in Current Times’ on 30th November 2020. She explained how poetry can become a form of solace for people and how it helps in facing mental health issues. Later, in the second part of the event, the results of the online poetry writing competition- ‘Courage in Adversity’ were declared. All the winners and the participants were given e-certificates. Attendees: 50 Outcome: Students learnt to appreciate the technicalities of poetry Title: Introduction to Psychoanalysis Objective: To provide a greater understanding of Psychoanalysis Methodology: Online guest lecture and demonstration Report: On 1st October 2020, Ms Radhika Chandrasekaran, a certified Arts-based therapist, delivered a talk on Psychoanalysis. It was followed with an online Storyboard competition on the topic- ‘Life Under Lockdown- Framing Perspectives’. Attendees: 27 Outcome: Participants and attendees gained an understanding of the intricacies of the Japanese anime form of manga.

Each session started with interactive greetings with orientation and consequently a Question and Answer session hosted by the Program Co-ordinator Dr.Vaneeta Raney and Ms. Kavya Pillai S.Y.B.A.M.M.C. with a maximum viewership of more than 15,000 and 3,000 on YouTube.

An International Webinar on 'Spatial Anxieties and Estrangement During and Post Pandemic: An International Perspective' by Dr. Peter Cunningham, Prof Emeritus, Faculty, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, was organized by the Department of English and SIES Central Training on 30th June 2020. The welcome address was given by Dr. Lakshmi Muthukumar, Head, Department of English. Dr. Cunningham examined the effects of the lockdown and the anxieties and estrangements faced by people especially with regard to the intimate spaces they occupy. The Question and answer session after the talk was vibrant and informative. The session was moderated by Ms. Vidya Hariharan and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Seema C. The webinar was held as part of the celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of SIES college of Arts, Science and Commerce (autonomous) Sion (W). More than a 100 students and staff of institutions all over India attended it.
