Utkarsha

10th April 2020, Physics Department

Students set up various experiments under the banner “Gravity” and exhibited on 2nd January 2020 during Utkarsha, the annual departmental fest. Nearly 40 students participated in this exhibition. Also, students made planetarium in the dark room of the laboratory. The event was witnessed by 500 students and staff . They all gave good feedback. An intercollegiate event ‘ Go Graviton’ was conducted on the same day. This was managed by 30 students.

Physics department and the laboratories was completely renovated. In a function held on 11/1/2020 Physics Department is named as Prof C.P.Narayan Menon Department of Physics. The function was presided by President of SIES Dr.V. Shankar. Prof Menon's family members were felicitated during this function. Many former Faculty members attended this function.

The department of Biochemistry in collaboration with Center for excellence, SIES College had organized a two day workshop 'Basic skills in Microsoft office' for TYBSc on 6th February and 2nd Marchn 2020. Biochemistry (3 Units) .MS Office being the most widely used application around the world, every student /working professional needs hands-on knowledge to complete his tasks effectively. In this course, the participants were introduced to MS Word , MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.

Marathi language day was celebrated by Department of Mass Media on 27th February, 2020. Multi Media and Mass Communication students took an initiative to organise and celebrate this day by exhibiting posters of stalwarts like the eminent Marathi poet and writer Shri Shirvadkar popularly known as ‘Kusmagraj’, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, Saint Dyaneshwar, Vinda Karandikar and P. L. Deshpande in the field of Arts. The students of FYBAMMC 2019-2020 performed a skit and mime act on the importance of Marathi as a mother tongue in Maharashtra. The exclusive craft of the Shivneri Fort was designed and displayed at the entrance of the department for an historical emotional connect and reminiscence.

The QKnit in collaboration with the Department of Mass Media organised one day youth festival in SIES College, Room No. 29 on 11th January, 2020. The Fest was conducted with the objective of spreading awareness on the Gender Sensitization for youth across gender spectrum. BMM students volunteered and also few students participated in the competitions. In addition, Ms. Kavya Pillai won the story telling competition, alongside Ms. Miura Bijoy bagged the third prize in poetry writing and recitation competition respectively. SIES mass media department was promotions, media and venue partner in association. The event was embarked under Queer Azaadi Mumbai Pride Calender 2020.

DE NOVO, a celebration of creativity and knowledge has always been organized under the banner of UTKARSH, the college festival. The festival was a one and half day affair. It was an event by the students, of the students and for the students conducted on 3rd and 4th January 2020.

Utkarsha - Hostile Takeover

Hostile Takeover contained 3 rounds. With the help of an interesting game, the participants were given a chance to collect money with which they were accordingly able to bid for and buy a company post which each team was given certain hurdles and situations, whose answers affected the company's net worth and also depended on whether they took over another company or lost theirs to someone else. Dynasty gave the participants a chance to physically build their empire in the form of Jenga blocks. Just like reality, they had hurdles and obstacles to overcome, which then decided on whether their empires flourished or fell apart.

Ludopoly -It's a fusion of ludo and monopoly. The event contains the basic functioning of both the nostalgic games with a twist which will challenge your Management and economical skills. Treasure Hunt scaled from Sion Circle to Dadar Circle. There was a slight twist in this compared to the regular Treasure hunt as we had added certain elements of Scavenger Hunt to this as well which tested multiple skills of the participants. Mock Stock is a toned-down version of the real stock market. It basically gave the gist of how various situations can affect the prices of the stocks, preparing the participants for the real world of stocks and commodities.

Microexplore (2019-2020)

The annual Microbiology exhibition “Microexplore” was held on the 2nd Jan 2020, under the aegis of Utkarsh. A total of 26 exhibits were presented on various aspects of Microbiology. Our flagship events based on Microbiology were conducted, such as, Micro Art and Poster presentation were conducted besides some fun events like Taboo (Guess the microbiological word) and Treasure hunt, based on clues related to Microbiology. The event saw a foot fall of around 100 people in a span of a single day.

Exhibition- Psych Fair, Open mic- 'Emotions Unleashed'

In the Pscy-fair exhibition, various stalls were set up like memory games, taboo, guess who (based on psychological principles). Open mic- Participants could sing, dance,enact for the event,the theme being expression of any emotion.

‘The Bollywood Brigade’ - Utkarsha

SIES Skyline held the intercollegiate event ‘The Bollywood Brigade’ for Utkarsha on 2nd Jan, 2020. The event comprised of 3 rounds all checking your Bollywood knowledge. 1) The Bollywood Inquisition 2) Bollywood Atlas – Map marking 3) Story writing (Change the ending) & Just-A-Minute. The event was judged by S. Ramachandran, Media and Bollywood. The event saw 17 teams participating from colleges across Mumbai. The winners were awarded with certificates and gift bags. Mr. Ramachandran was presented with a citation and a Thank You gift bag. The event saw special jamming session by Bijoy and his group, mimicry by Fareha Kazi and a filmy performance by our judge – Mr. Ramchandran.

BMM department organised a two events in Uttkarsh

Picture saga was an event conducted for photography mavens under the categories namely; usage of mobile camera and DSLR for shooting and knitting a picturesque story on the themes given to the participants. Subsequently, the theme with the best click and storytelling won the hearts of judges and the audiences. On the other hand, the creative minds crafted an event called Decode the Fog, a game event, under the department of Mass Media. The event consisted of a mind-boggling session where the contestants guessed the price of antique materials, they guessed the brands of the taglines given to them and as tie-breaker the team had to decode Hindi songs which were translated in English. The events were a blend of the mass media education with a fun filled daybreak on the campus in turn.

SIES Skyline launched its Volume 8: Issue 2 in the august presence of Vice Principal Dr Menon, Mr Saravanan Nadar, Pranav Kelkar, Anshudeep Sharda and Amruta Padhye on 23rd Dec, 2019. The dignitaries were presented with flower bouquets as a token of appreciation followed by the lighting of the lamp to begin with the launch of the Newsletter followed by the Open Mic Event. The Newsletter launch was followed by the prize distribution for the Best Volunteers and Best Editorial Board Members from Issue 1.

SIES Skyline held its first ‘Open mic event’

SIES Skyline held its first ‘Open mic event’ in association with YOW Creative Annex LLP. on 23rd Dec, 2019. ‘Speaking Souls’ in an international open mic event chain that aims at providing a platform to the local artists to showcase their talent. It saw enthusiastic participation from students across various college of Mumbai. The event was graced by the likes of Pranav Kelkar – spoken word artists and singer, Anshudeep Sharda - Co-Founder at YOW, and Ms Amruta Padhye–Department of Philosophy, SIES College, who was also the judge for the event. The open mic witnessed performances in various genres like comedy, poetry, storytelling to signing and beatboxing. There was a special performance by Comic – Pooja Paath, a SIES Alumnus and singing duo – Bijoy and Clinston from the college. The event ended on a high note with a special performance by Mr Pranav Kelkar. The judges were presented with citations and Thank You gift bags as a token of appreciation from Team Skyline, and all the winners were given certificates and goodies’ bags sponsored by HBO. All participants were given certificate of participation.

The BMM Department of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized an industrial visit to Rajasthan for the SYBMM students from 17th to 22nd of December, 2019. The visit covered two major cities of Rajasthan- Jodhpur and Jaisalmer under the guidance of Faculty- Ms. Amanjeet Kaur, Ms. Nikhila Chandavarkar, and Mr. Sandeep Tiwari. As a part of the folk media and mass communication study, the students headed to Mehrangarh fort and Jaswant Thada with beautiful architectural structures. The students visited the Jaisalmer Military Station with museums showcasing the achievements by Indian Army. The students headed to Desert Adventure Camp, Jaisalmer. They witnessed live cultural dance and puppetry shows and performance by the locals followed by star gazing activity to boot.

Team Skyline had organised ‘Chirpy Chidiya’ on Dec 11th (Traditional day) and Dec 12th (Formal day), 2019. It was an open-board of secrets and confessions. The basic idea was that students can write their messages anonymously on a sticky note and post it!! This secret board saw many hilarious, cute, risqué, friendly confessions, for the two days that it was set up. Overall, it was a safe platform for the students to hash out their confessions without being judged for it.

The BMM Department of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized an industrial visit to Mahabaleshwar-Pune for FYBAMMC students from 24th to 26th November, 2019. The visit covered two major industries, Mapro production and sales distribution outlet and Lokmat printing press under the guidance of Faculty- Ms. Amanjeet Kaur, Ms. Ruchita Karmokar. The students were shown a documentary on the making and selling of jams and jellies respectively. In Pune they visited the Lokmat printing press and observed the working of the newspaper agency and printing of newspapers correspondingly.

FYBAMMC students on creating social awareness

The BMM department organised an activity which FYBAMMC students performed by 7 member group on 3rd October from 9 am to 12.30 pm in the backside of the college. The themes centred on social issues which was portrayed through various forms of oral communication on the topics such as religious disparity, rape, human and organ trafficking, decriminalisation of Section 377, save girl child, drug addiction, drunk and driving cases. The students of FYBAMMC participated enthusiastically and received a positive response from a captivated audience eventually.

The blogs are written by students that are a part of team Skyline and also anyone interested from within SIES College, the content is then edited, proofread and posted by the Content Team of Skyline. The blog creates great engagement as the readers come across Book reviews, Movie reviews, Food reviews, Places to Visit, Political News that’s trending, among other such interesting topics. SIES Skyline has collaborated with Finception for their weekly newsletter Finshots. The subscriber gets a concise wrap up of the most important Business and Financial news of the week. About Finception: It is a Fintech startup that envisions to make financial news more accessible to the masses and is backed by Zerodha’s Fintech fund – Rainmatter. An initiative by the students of IIM Ahmedabad, the e-newsletter aims to provide their readers with precise and concise information that will not only keep them updated with the current financial affairs but also help them prepare for placement interviews, group discussions, and also entrance exams preparation (like CAT) by helping them polish their current affairs. In an effort to increase interaction with our audience online, SIES Skyline holds weekly polls on Sundays where the followers of the page can engage in some interesting polls. The topics include movies, politics, about Mumbai, etc. Such dynamic content created high amount of engagement of the Instagram platform which is good for the association’s social media presence.

SIES Skyline hosted its induction ceremony for the incoming team of editor-in-chief Garima Bhatt and her team on 21st Sept, 2019 in the college auditorium. The event was graced by Principal Dr Uma Shankar, Vice Principal Dr Satish Sarfare, Dr Lakshmi Muthukumar (HOD, English Department), Mrs Umadevi Kokku (HOD, BMS Department) and Mr Saravanan Nadar (Asst. Professor, BMS Department). This was followed by the Induction Ceremony where Badges and cards were presented to the incoming team. After this, the Principal along with other dignitaries unfurled the banner for the Issue launch. The launch of Volume 8: Issue 1 was indeed a successful step towards the upcoming milestones.

Organizers: Department of Bioanalytical Sciences, SIES College in collaboration with Pollux Life Science Solutions, Mumbai Background: Department of Bioanalytical Sciences, SIES College which is Interdisciplinary Science with syllabus especially catering to the current Pharmaceutical Industry needs, in its inaugural month conducted an Orientation Session on “Opportunities in Pharmaceutical Industries” in collaboration with Pollux Life Science Solution, Mumbai (an affiliated training partner of Life Sciences Sector Skill Development Council, Maharashtra). Pollux Life Science Solutions has been conducting training programme for students in Drug regulatory affairs and Pharmacovigilance in SIES College for past 2-3 years with 90% placement rate and has a MOU with the College. These training programme are under the aegis of “Skill India Development Initiative” Objective: The objective of the orientation was to introduce students to Skills Development initiative. To make students understand the role of National Skill Development Council (NSDC)/ Life Science Sector Skill Development Council (LSSSDC) in promoting career opportunities in Pharmaceutical Industries. To introduce students Functional Training programme conducted by Pollux Life Science Solution which is beneficial to Educational Institutions and students participant and the investments of participants. Impact: The programme beneficiaries included faculty and Postgraduate students belonging to Chemical and Biological Sciences background. This orientation was a step taken by the department of Bioanalytical Sciences to bridge the gap between Academics and Industries, so as to make the participants realize that additional skills/ Training are necessary along with degree before venturing in Pharmaceutical industrial jobs market.

The department of Mass Media conducted a Seminar for the College where one could improve their editing skills. Ms. Nikhila Chandavarkar conducted the seminar for two days where various aspects of Grammar was explained, exercises were conducted and assignments were given and discussed. Subsequently, the students were enlightened about the uses of different punctuation marks, capital letters in a sentence and types of headlines which benefited the advertising students and aspiring journalists into the bargain.

Industrial Visit to Veego Instrument Corporation

Background: Veego Instrument Corporation is a renowned name in manufacturing high quality scientific equipments and devices which provide quality performance. Veego instruments are known for their precise control of parameters and long-term reliability. Veego Instruments are used in various QC and R&D laboratories of Pharmaceutical/ Chemical/ Food/ Petroleum/ Oil and other Industries. Department of Bioanalytical Sciences, SIES College started in August 2019 is an Interdisciplinary Science with syllabus especially catering to the current Pharmaceutical Industry needs. The curriculum of Bioanalytical Sciences consists of testing various parameters of pharmaceutical drugs using sophisticated scientific equipments. Objective: The objective of the Industrial Visit was to introduce students to how equipments /instruments are manufactured and the R&D effort put in the fabrication of these instruments. To make students understand the role of pre validation of the equipments so as to obtain precision in qualitative parameters. To introduce students Good Manufacturing Practices compliances. Impact: The Industry Visit was beneficial to the M.Sc part 1 students of Bioanalytical Sciences as they were able to observe manufacturing and the detailed effort put in designing the instruments they are going to use during their practicals. This Industrial visit was a step taken by the department of Bioanalytical Sciences so as to make the Students understand the various Good Manufacturing practice and Good Laboratory Practices an industry has to comply with and not merely learn in the curriculum.
