Students across all batches of UG and PG Botany were mentored by the faculty of Botany department and the discussion was based on academic concerns. Suitable suggestions were provided and students were guided accordingly.

Competitive Exam Guidance Lecture

1st March 2023, Botany Department

The Department of Botany organized three guidance lectures on competitive exams like NET, SET, PET, GATE, etc. for Postgraduate Botany students. It oriented them about the strategy to study for these exams and the simple tricks to clear them. It clarified most of the doubts related to the same.

Excursion to Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli

22nd February 2023, Botany Department

As a part of the curriculum, the M.Sc. Botany students were taken to the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli in order to impart awareness regarding mangrove ecosystem. This Centre is located among the Airoli mangroves and aims towards conserving the mangrove ecosystem as well as spread knowledge about the biodiversity and importance of mangroves to the common people. The students were thrilled to walk among the mangrove plants and observe their diversity as well as adaptive features.

Career Prospects and Higher studies in Botany

The Department of Botany organized career guidance lecture for SYBSc and TYBSc Botany students through hybrid mode. The students were given clear picture about future scope of botany in career management as well as in higher studies in India and abroad. It made them aware about the various opportunities after graduating in botany and guided them about different career options available after graduation and post-graduation in the subject.

Visit to Friends of the Trees - Vegetable, Fruit, and Flower sho

11th February 2023, Botany Department

As a part of the curriculum, the T.Y.B.Sc. Botany Applied Component (Horticulture) students were taken to the Annual Vegetable, Fruit, and Flower show at D. G. Ruparel College. This show is organized by "National Society of the Friends of the Trees' to showcase various fruit trees, vegetables, and flowering plants to the common man. Aspects of lendscaping, conservation and eco friendly living are also explored in this show. Various compctitions like plant identification, landscaping, best out of waste, fruit & vegetable carving, flower arrangement, bonsai making, etc. are also conducted to spread awareness among the masses. There are many stalls set up towards the end of the exhibition which sell pots, plants, gardening equipment, etc. where one can purchase their gardening requirements. Department

Botanical Gifts -Exhibition cum Sale

10th February 2023, Botany Department

TYBSc Botany students participated in exhibition stall on the theme of "Botanical Gifts' organized by Friends of Tree organization at D. G. Ruparel College, Matunga. The students enjoyed the event and learnt to prepare eco-friendly planters, seed packets, seed-bombs, hanging baskets, face packs, resin-art bio-jewelry, etc.

Bridge course for Semester-II

The motive behind this course was to bridge the gap of knowledge in the field of plant morphology and to give students an overall idea for floral sectioning, slide preparations and identification of floral parts.

Visit to BMC Flower show at Byculla Rani Baug

4th February 2023, Botany Department

As a part of the curriculum, the T.Y.B.Sc. Botany Applied component (Horticulture) students were taken to the annual fruit and flower show at Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, Byculla to familiarize the students to common fruiting and flowering plants used in day-to-day life. This show is organized by the Brihanmumbai Mahanagar Palika annually to spread awareness about plants among the masses.

Kalpavriksha (Departmental Festival)

Department of Botany organized celebration of Departmental festival Kalpavriksha' on 2nd February 2023. It was held offline in Biology laboratory 2 & 3 including the corridor area outside the labs from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The fest consisted of two events and three stalls.

Excursion to Karnala Sanctuary and Go Green Nursery, Karnala

As a part of curriculum, the excursion to a forest area makes the students aware about the distribution and growth patterns of plants in the wild. Besides, visit to a nursery showcases the various aspects of nursery management as a branch of horticulture.

Departmental Newsletter -Gulmohar 2022 - 23

The main objective was to motivate the students to come up with the online newsletter, "Gulmohar" for the department. It was organised under the broad objecuve of soft skill development and environmental awareness creation amongst the readers and volunteers.

Composting and Basket Gardening Workshop

The Department of Botany conducted a 'Hands-on training workshop on Composting and Basket Farming' for the students of Gotheghar Ashramshala. They were assisted by a few SYBSC and TYBSc Botany students in organizing the training. The school students were provided with the materials required for carrying out composting and basket farming.

International Webinar in Celebration of World Fungus Day

The Department of Botany, in collaboration with the Association of Fungal Biologists, proudly organized an international webinar on World Fungus Day. This highly anticipated event marked the inaugural activity of the Association of Fungal Biologists, bringing together experts and enthusiasts from around the world to delve into the fascinating world of fungal biotechnology and explore the potential of mushroom derived products in the field of cosmeceuticals.

National Level Fungal Photography Competition: Mesmerising Fungi

The 'Mesmerising Fungi' photography competition was an exciting event held on World Fungus Day, 2nd October 2022, organised by the department of Botany in collaboration with Association of Fungal Biologists (AFB), bringing together photography enthusiasts and nature lovers from all corners of India. The competition was kept open to participants two weeks before the results were declared on World Fungus Day. The department also conducted Webinar lectures along with declaration of result for the photography competition on the same day.

Excursion to Palasdhari

16th August 2022, Botany Department

Palasdhari is a quaint village situated ahead of Karjat and has picturesque landscape with undulating land, small ponds and waterfalls. It forms a perfect location in the monsoon to observe rich diverse flora in the wild. A one-day excursion to this place was conducted for the students of SYBSC, TYBSc and M.Sc.-I as per their curriculum.

Azadi Amrut Mahotsav Celebration

12th August 2022, Botany Department

The Department of Botany organized an event 'Botanica 75' to celebrate Azadi Amrut Mohotsav from 12th to 15th August, 2022. As a part of the event, posters display on 75 commercial Indian crops, 75 Ayurvedic plants of Indian origin, 75 job opportunities in botany and plant exhibition were arranged. A book entitled 75 important trees of Mumbai' was also published by the department.

Excursion to Rani Baug, Byculla

As a part of the curriculum, the T.Y.B.Sc. Botany Applied Component (Horticulture) students were taken to the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Rani Baug) to observe various garden locations, landscaping techniques and plants in this unique garden. Rani Baug is a botanical garden and zoo located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai city. This garden houses many unique, rare, and exotic plants in addition to the rich local flora of the city. Few old and heritage trees are also planted in this garden which are more than a century old.

Hydroponics Workshop

The Department of Botany organized a Demo-workshop on Hydroponic cultivation of crops' for students ofTYBSC Horticulture. It included a theory session followed by demonstration. The resource person was Mr. Shivaji Patange.

Plant Week Celebration

The Department of Botany organized "Plantation Week Celebration' from in which the plant-able seed cups of Spinach and Marigold prepared by TYBSC students were distributed to teachers for their home plantation.

Summer training for Students

The participating students of M.Sc.-II Botany successfully completed a Short-Term Training Program in ‘Plant Tissue Culture’ organized by KET’s Scientific Research Centre, from 12th May 2022 to 23rd May 2022.

Credit Course

10th May 2022, Botany Department

The One Credit Course on “Tree Appreciation” was conducted by the Botany Department, which included one offline field visit to Rani Bagh, Byculla on the 1st May, 2022 (Sunday) and eight online modules from 7th May, 2022 to 10th May, 2022. These were followed by online assessment of 40 marks in Google form format consisting of MCQ type questions based on the modules conducted. Bridge course - Microscopy, Morphology of Flowering Plants

Department of Botany conducted one bridge course per semester in online mode through MS Teams platform. The details of the bridge courses were as follows. o Semester-I – Study of parts of microscope (20th & 22nd October 2022) o Semester-II – Morphology of flowering plants (28th January & 2nd February 2022) Powerpoint presentations were shown for better understanding of the concepts related to light microscope and dissection microscope in the first semester and morphological aspects of angiosperms in the second semester. A glossary of important terminologies was provided to the students for reference.

Environmental Awareness Week Celebration

On Diamond Jubilee of the College, the Department of Botany celebrated ‘Environmental awareness week’ from 5th June to 12th June. Three competitions were held during environmental awareness week. • Essay writing competition: The participants were supposed to write essay on anyone topic from the three. 1000 – 1200 words were expected in essay. Topics for essay competition were My role in environment conservation, Impact of climate change on Himalayas, Impact of lockdown on environment. • Poster making competition: The participants were supposed to make a poster using their own creativity. For poster three topics were provided - Ecotourism and Urban forestry, Green energy resources, Mangrove ecosystem in India. • Quiz competition: The quiz competition was conducted through google form. Topic for quiz competition was We and our environment.

Credit course on ‘Tree Appreciation’

Department of Botany conducted one-credit course on ‘Tree Appreciation’ in blended mode on 1st May 2022 and 7th May to 10th May 2022. One offline field visit to Veermata Jijabai Bhosle Udyan, Byculla was organized on 1st May, 2022 which lasted for about three hours. Interesting features of the plants and their unique remarkable significance were highlighted to the student participants in simple understandable language, considering their non-Botany background. Online lectures with the help of powerpoint presentations were conducted by every faculty of the Botany department from 7th May to 10th May, which covered various aspects of the plant world, focussing mainly on the tree species

Kalpavriksha 2016

Departmental Botany festival Kalpavriksha was organized on 19th & 20th September 2016 during Utkarsha. In this festival, competitions such as paper quilling jewellery, biorangoli, Pehchan kaun?, Essay writing and Bio-games like Selfie hunt, Poke hunt, Sense your senses were arranged. Exhibition cum sale of Book marks, envelopes, greeting cards, chocolates, nursery plants, etc. was also organized. During Kalpavriksha, the students got platform to show their skills and creativity. The festival was attended by more than 150 students.

Bioart Mela – It was an inter and intra collegiate event which included 4 competitions, viz., Bio-rangoli, Bio-jewellery, Fruit and Vegetable carving and Poster making. Biogames – It was an inter and intra collegiate event which included 3 botanical game competitions, viz., Botanicula, Sense your Senses and Selfi Hunt. Exhibition cum sale of Plants and Plant Products –It included sell of Herbal cosmetics (Face-pack), Artistic handmade bookmarks, name tags, greeting cards, Dry-fruit Chocolates, Nursery plants. All the exhibits were prepared by FY, SY and TYBSc Botany students.

Garden Craft

A value added course 'Garden Craft' was organized by Department of Botany on Tuesday, 28th July 2015 for the members of MSSI (Multiple Sclerosis Society of India), Sion.
