Psychology Department < Back to departments

Department of Psychology was established in 2007 to cater to the growing demand by students to offer specialization in the subject of Psychology. The Department emphasizes developing sound knowledge-base of Psychology, ability to apply this knowledge to real-life issues as well as sensitivity to the context in which one is working, a strong sense of discipline and ethical values. At the Department, learning is enhanced by the use of classroom discussions, guest lectures, screening of relevant videos, films, documentaries. Role-plays, case-studies, problem-solving exercises help students clarify the concepts taught. As a part of assignments, students are encouraged to make presentations, participate in group discussions, work as volunteers at NGOs, conduct awareness campaigns on topics related to Psychology, interact with the experts in the field, and conduct research study. These offer students ample opportunities develop insight about the subject and become sensitive towards the needs and challenges of the real-world. Department also has its own library with more than 70 books, which are very helpful for the students for understand the nuances of the subject and its application.

Students of the Department are successfully working as mental health professionals and academicians in various fields like hospitals, counseling centers, industries, educational institutes. Some of the students have also worked on the field projects related to psychological well-being initiated by the Government of India, Mumbai Police and private organizations working in the field of mental health.

National webinar on "Community Mental Health"

8th January 2022, Psychology Department

Department of Psychology organised a national webinar on "Community Mental Health: Issues, challenges and opportunities". The purpose of the webinar was to create awareness about the field of community mental health and the opportunities therein.

Writing and Publishing a Research Paper

5th March 2020, Psychology Department

A detailed lecture on how to choose a topic, write a title , and report scientific findings were taught to students with precise examples of each. Thus the speaker Dr. Mrinalini Purandare made it simple for the students to understand and also raised their curiosity in conducting research.

Workshop on ' Suicide Prevention'

28th February 2020, Psychology Department

Ms. Ketki Doshi from Sisters Living Works conduted the workshop for TYBA Psychology students. She addressed warning signs, risk, protective factors, conducting risk assessment etc. Students found it very helpful as they had studied a part of it in their syllabus.

Understanding Genetics

27th February 2020, Psychology Department

Dr. Subi Yoosuf from Department of Biotechnology, conducted a guest leture for the students of TYBA Psychology to understand basics of genetics. This lecture helped students to understand the biological perscpective in depth.

Workshop on 'R' Software

24th February 2020, Psychology Department

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Leela Subramanian on 24th and 25tth Feb. The resource person made the content very simple. She also addressed the fear of Statictics, and encouraged students to do self learning.

Monday with Maslow

27th January 2020, Psychology Department

A fund raising activity with different stalls, gaming stalls (dobble), eating stalls etc. Students and staff members contributed books and objects like jewellery, purses etc and this was been purchased by the college students and faculties. The fund was donated to Deepstambh Foundation, Jalgaon.

Work Culture and Organizational Behaviour: An Indian Perspective

Dr. Kamala Srinivas from Philosophy Dept. was the resource person for the talk. She spoke majorly on emotions and attitudes at the workplace (considering ndian Ethos) comparing the Indian scenario with western scenario.

Ms. Vrushali Gupte, from Philosophy Department was the resource person. She addressed the topic on Motivation comparing Indian and Western scenario keeping in the background the Indian Philosophical values and concepts

Exhibition- Psych Fair, Open mic- 'Emotions Unleashed'

In the Pscy-fair exhibition, various stalls were set up like memory games, taboo, guess who (based on psychological principles). Open mic- Participants could sing, dance,enact for the event,the theme being expression of any emotion.

Field Visit

6th November 2019, Psychology Department

A field visit was organised for TYBA Psychology Students to Manobal, Jalgaon. In Manobal various projects are run for orphans, physically disabled etc. That is not only a home but serves as a learning centre for various exams. Students from there have cleared various competitive exams, bank exams etc. Students also visited Gandhi Tirth, to know more about Mahatma Gandhi,

Experimental Psychology: Past, Present and Future

Dr. Vivek Belhekar spoke about the importance of experiments in gaining knowledge about the field of Psychology.

Applications of Mindfulness in day-to-day Living

Ms. Chitra Kelkar spoke about the importance of being in te present moment. She also discusssed a few techniques in achieving the same. In the end she gave the audience a n eclair and asked to pay attention while eating it (eat it mindfully)

Workshop on Empathy

Department past student Ms. Rasika Karkare conducted a workshop on how to deonstrate empathy in therapeutic sessions. The workshop was made interesting as there were many activities. Students appreciated the workshop.

Orientation session

Orientation session was organized for the students and parents of TYBA Psychology class, with the purpose of informing them about the TYPsychology course structure, evaluation pattern and course demands.

Ethics of Research

Dr. Neha Karnik from Department of Economics delivered a lecture on the above mentioned topic to TYBA Psychology students. She also spoke about correct referencing, choosing of a topic etc. It was a very informative lecture especially for those students who pursued research as a part of their internal assesssment.

Actors Ms. Jui and Actor Mr. Ms. Jui spoke about her experience in Marathi Industry. She was recently screened in a reality show 'Big Boss'. She mentioned that Big Boss was not scripted but very well edited. Students asked both the actors a lot of questions. It was a very interactive session. Students are always fascinated about the glamorous cine world hence the program was very well received.

Psychology Exhibition

As a part of Utkarsha-2016-17 Psychology Association organized Psychology-related exhibition named ‘Psyched-up’. Those who visited the exhibition were asked to play games related to Psychology and then psychological principles underlying these games were explained. 255 students from our college and a few other colleges visited this exhibition.

Workshop on Dance Movement Therapy

Past-student of the Department, Vidhya Shenoy along with her colleague Nandini Ray conducted a workshop on Dance Movement Therapy. They elaborated on this therapy, its effectiveness by engaging the students in various activities like dancing and painting.

Film Screening: Sybil

The screening of the movie 'Sybil' was organized to help students better understand the disorder that they learn about in the subject of Abnormal Psychology. 21 students from TYBA Psychology attended the movie screening.
