Department Vision

The Department of Philosophy is committed to strengthen its institutional vision in broadening its recognition for academic excellence in life-long learning, in the production of high-quality scholarly research and community services.

Department Mission

To foster understanding of fundamental philosophical ideas and issues. To fulfill it, the department strives first to teach its learners the basic skill and practices of philosophical inquiry; openness in attitude; analysis & questioning of key concepts; articulation of logical premises & conclusion and to give critical response to arguments. Second, to provide its learners with historically important philosophical debates, its development in contemporary philosophy and applications of philosophical ideas in every walk of life. Third, to recognize the value and prominence of diversity in curriculum; extend its activities outside the classroom, supporting its learners’ engagement across all disciplines by creating a rich mentoring environment.

To achieve all these outcomes, the department is committed to create an inclusive and equitable space every time all the stakeholders gather to interact.

Understanding the real through the reel

The Tattvam Philosophy Association organised an interactive session on Ms. Teams. The speaker shared his life experiences and insights about regional cinema, the struggles he faced and the opportunities he sought to portray the societal issues through his lens with an optimism to bring about a paradigm shift in the society on issues like casteism, reservation, mental health etc. Student participants engaged a meaningful conversation with the speaker, through the question and answer session of the event

Venture Synergia –One day workshop

11th February 2021, Philosophy Department

Department of Philosophy, History and Economics cooperatively organized a digital workshop as part of the intra-collegiate Fest UTKARSHA 2021. This workshop was all about business/start up ideas and how to work on them. The workshop was conducted on MS. Teams. The resource person took over the workshop and gave an insight into the corporate world. He then proceeded with explaining the underlying principles. His way of giving examples and placing questions in front of the students was liked by everyone. Students enthusiastically answered his questions. The ‘Soft skills’ gave us an idea as to how creativity is the key to stand out and be unique. Moving ahead he threw light on ‘Mental blocks’ which are the barriers to be creative. His personal experiences added a special touch to the workshop. His ideologies, formulas for a successful start-up were very outstanding and knowledgeable. After his wonderful explanation, a Q/A session was open to all

Three day workshop on ‘An Introduction to Heartfulness Practices

The Department of Philosophy in association with IQAC & Heartfulness Institute, India, organized the workshop 6th to 8th July, 2020 on Ms. Teams. The participants were oriented to practice of the heartfulness meditation, through the PowerPoint presentations and interactive demo sessions on by the facilitators. The workshop ended with a positive feedback session between the facilitators and participants

International Yoga Day-The Eco Guide to Yoga webinar

The Department of Philosophy, Value Lab and IQAC jointly, conducted the webinar to orient the participants the practice of Yoga in everyday life from a philosophical and spiritual perspective. The webinar was conducted through MS Teams. It was both lecture cum demonstration of breathing practices (Pranayama) and meditation (dhyana). The webinar concluded with an interactive question and answer session.

In continuation to the Crithink workshop, under Nirmiti Kendra, funded by RUSA, The Art of Reasoning and Critical Thinking, 30 hours workshop commenced on 18th November 2019. The Resource Person Mr. Peter Akbar, Founder and Chief Instructor at Logos Inc., engaged an activity based program that enabled the student participants to learn the significance of critical thinking in personal and professional life.

SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce (Autonomous), Sion West celebrated ‘International Yoga Day’ organized by Department of Philosophy in association with Past Students’ Association on 21st June, 2019. A session on ‘Chair Yoga’ was conducted by Mr. Sandeep Solanki, completed formal Yoga training from Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanvantari, Kerala, a renowned Yoga trainer and an accomplished Posture Alignment Specialist.
