Introduction:

The department of History as an independent department came during 1988 under the Headship of a senior scholar of the ‘History of Medicine’, Historian Dr. Mridula Ramanna. Dr. Ramanna retired as HOD, History in 2008.

Course Outcome:

  • Along with regular classroom teaching, Department organizes outside classroom learning activity through visits to museums and Historical Sites, Excursions, field visits etc to enhance the interest of the students in the study of History.
  • For enhancing students’ interest in the subject there are organized co-curricular activities such as presentations, group discussions, quizzes, organizing poster exhibitions, video clip making on historical theme etc.
  • To create interest in History research, the department started the Manuscript, ‘Historica’. Under this, various areas of history are selected for a small research activity. Historica Manuscript has been converted into a digital form newsletter, during the Covid Pandemic. Students` enjoy working in team for the newsletter. Good themes have been adopted by the students for the newsletter

Venture Synergia –One day workshop,

As a part of UTKARSHA, the academic Festival, History, Philosophy and Economics Department jointly organized a Workshop. This workshop was all about business/start up ideas and how to work on them. Mr. Prabhu Swaminathan – Founder of AFMOI, LAFORS Talent Solutions India Pvt. Ltd, g gave students, an insight into the corporate world. His ideologies, formulas for a successful start-up were very outstanding and knowledgeable.

To commemorate Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, The department of History and The department of Philosophy, jointly organized with the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra of Chinmaya Mission, Powai, 'Youth Arise Awake Session. The session was interactive and thought-provoking activities which highlighted the values of Swadharma, Karma and Ahimsa in everyday life. Mr. . Aravind Raghavan, Trainer in Chinmaya Yuva Kendra guided students on value, concepts and their relevance in life. The session also helped them to get an insight in to learning skills to better themselves in their life.

Conducted a certificate course in Introduction to Epigraphy

21st August 2019, History Department

department conducted a Certificate Course on, ' Introduction to Epigraphy: Learning the Brahmi Script', under the Brahmi Script scholar and an Archaeologist Ms. Anuja Joshi. In all 35 students successfully completed and enjoyed the course. It was followed by the participants visit to the Kanheri Caves, for reading the stone inscription in Brahmi Script of of the Satvahana period.

National Seminar on, 'Chanakya`s Wisdom: A Re Appraisal'

The department jointly with the department of Philosophy organised a two national Seminar, from 9 to 10th February 2018, on the Theme, Chanakya`s Wisdom: A Re Appraisal' Papers on variety of topics related to the theme were presented at the seminar.

Ashadhi Ekadashi Event

4th July 2017, History Department

Collective event of the Department of History, Department of Philosophy and the Marathi Wangmay Mandal, Expressing the Historical, Philosophical and Literary importance of Ashadhi Ekadashi and Pandharpur Pilgrimage. Historical background of the Bhakti Movement & the foundation of the Maratha Swarajya by Chhatrapati Shivaji, spiritual & philosophical importance of the Bhakti Sampradaya also the Literature of the Saints of maharashtra were the themes of this program. It included a narration, dramatisation, Kirtan, Dindi, recitation of Abhanga`s and the symbolic Pandharpur Wari by the students.

Inaugural of 'HISTORIC', Manuscript of the Dept of History

• During the Academic year 2016-17, Department brought out the second manuscript HISTORICA. The theme of HISTORICA this year is ‘The Vedic Age’ and the department of Philosophy was invited to contribute the section on the Vedic Philosophy for this year’s manuscript.The Manuscript was inaugurated by Former HOD Philosophy, former Director of Anantacharya Institute of Vedanta studies and research, a refined scholar of Vedanta, Prof R.M.Dave. Principal, Dr. Uma Shankar delivered the welcome address at the inaugural.

Department of History,Philosophy and Politics, organized a study for the students of T.Y.B.A students with Amrut Yatra, at * Gandhi Teerth, Jalgaon, the largest museum on the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi, * Jain Irrigation, an industrial project * The World Heritage site of Ajanta caves and * MANOBAL- India`s first of kind competitive exams residential training center for physically, visually challenged students.

• Rajni Mathur, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, delivered a guest on 27th February 2017, for the students of the T.Y.B.A. Class, on ‘The Architecture at Hampi’, the Capital town of the Vijayanagar Empire. The T.Y students study about the VijaynagarEmpire as a part of the syllabus.

• The students of S.Y and T.Y. B.A History and Applied Component paper Travel and Tourism, visited the famous Maratha Fort Loahgad near Khopoli, on January 26th 2017. On this occasion of the Republic Day, the Flag Hoisting and National anthem was performed at the Lohagad Fort.

Guest Lecture on ' Chanakya'

•Dr. Radhakrishna Pillai, an author of the famous book, Corporate Chanakya delivered a guest lecture, ‘Relevance of Chanakya Today’, on 26th August 2016. Lecture was followed by the questionnaire by the students with overwhelming attendance.

Visit to Kawthewadi Villege near Karjat

c) The department jointly organised a visit to Kawthewadi, an adopted village near Karjat, under the ISR. The students performed a skit on the health awareness especially the water related health problems, an art and craft activity was also conducted by the students for the school going kids of the village, on November 20th 2016.
