Physics Department < Back to departments

Physics Department is one of the departments, established in the year 1960.Department is equipped with three laboratories, and a research lab that is recognized as PhD Centre by Mumbai University. The department has a library with 800+ books. E-content and study material are made available to the students through MS Teams.

Department faculty members shoulder key responsibilities in academics and administrative management of the institute. Some of the faculty members have guided students of other institutes participating in international competition- Astronomy Olympiad.

We are fortunate to have set of students who excel in studies as well as in extra-curricular activities. Many of them preferred to join as faculty members to carry on the legacy of the college.

Utkarsha

10th April 2020, Physics Department

Students set up various experiments under the banner “Gravity” and exhibited on 2nd January 2020 during Utkarsha, the annual departmental fest. Nearly 40 students participated in this exhibition. Also, students made planetarium in the dark room of the laboratory. The event was witnessed by 500 students and staff . They all gave good feedback. An intercollegiate event ‘ Go Graviton’ was conducted on the same day. This was managed by 30 students.

Add-on course- Basic Astronomy

Conducted Add-on course “Basic Astronomy”. This is an inter-disciplinary course conducted in collaboration with Khagol Mandal. The valedictory function is scheduled on 15/3/2020 but postponed due to lock-down.

Dr. Abhay Despande, Grade E Scientist, of SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research) delivered a talk on ‘Particle Accelerator in Cancer Therapy” on 19th July 2019. The lecture was attended by staff and students of all science departments.

Department named after C.P N. Menon

Physics department and the laboratories was completely renovated. In a function held on 11/1/2020 Physics Department is named as Prof C.P.Narayan Menon Department of Physics. The function was presided by President of SIES Dr.V. Shankar. Prof Menon's family members were felicitated during this function. Many former Faculty members attended this function.

A new Research Lab is set up. Research lab contains research equipment procured with financial assistance received from UGC (minor research project), DBT (Star program) and DST (Under FIST program).

Training programme in 8085 Microprocessor

It was a 2 day Training Programme organised for TYBSc students on 21st and 23rd December 2017. Programs in assembly language for 8085 microprocessor were designed and written by Mrs. Pratibha Pai in such a manner that it suited the students very well.

Add-on Course "Engaging the 8085 Microprocessor"

Interdisciplinary Add-on Course for IT students titled "Engaging the 8085 microprocessor"was conducted for by the Physics department. Course length was 15 hrs and it was conducted over 6 sessions.

Utkarsha Event: FIZIKA

The Physics department organized an intercollegiate competition Fizika as part of the activities for Utkarsha 2017 on 11th December 2017. There were a total of 6 teams that took part, with each team consisting of two students. The colleges represented were Ratnam College, R. Jhunjhunwala College and SIES College. The competition was a gauntlet that involved 6 experiments. Each experiment was designed to test the different laboratory skills that a physics student learns as a first year student.

Workshop titled "Use of MS Excel for graph plotting

Workshop on Excel for MSc Part 1 students on 14th October, 2017.Prof Swapnil Jawakar of the Physics Department was the resource person for this workshop.Students were taught about the basics of Excel. Students were also explained the use of simple tools and formatting of data etc.

Orientation cum counseling session

Orientation cum counseling session was conducted for the freshly admitted students of Semester 1 of MSc part I on 27th September 2017. During the session all 10 students were present.

Remedial course in Physics Practicals

22nd September 2017, Physics Department

Students who took admission late and /or who missed practical sessions due to medical issues, passing repeat HSC examination and other valid reasons were permitted to perform experiments under remedial course. The course was conducted after the completion of the regular practical sessions from 22nd September to 4th October 2017(7 sessions). A record of the course was maintained to ensure that the students completed all the required number of experiments as prescribed in the syllabus of Mumbai University. Such students were able to clear their default and were eligible to appear for semester end practical examination.

One day workshop titled "Designing and building a dual power supply" was organised for the students of MSc (Physics) part II Semester 3 on 12th September 2017 to make them self reliant with respect to working projects.

Educational visit to Nehru Science Centre

One day Educational Visit to Nehru Science Centre, Worli was organized for the students of SYBSc on 9th September 2017. Students focused on the experimental set up and made a report of the visit independently. Two staff members Mr. Swapnil Jawkar and Mr. Maheshwar Falake accompanied the students. Fifty five (55) students participated and immensely benefitted.

One day bridge course in Physics practical was conducted for SYBSc students on 9th,10th and 11th June 2016 separately for each batch. A total of 62 students were fortunate to participate in this course. The course was conducted to develop skill in the use of measuring instruments vernier calipers, micrometer screw gauge, travelling microscope and adjustments of spectrometer.

Two day bridge course for TY BSc Physics students was conducted on 8th and 9th June 2016 in handling the spectrometer, develop skill in soldering simple circuits and testing them and also connecting electronic circuits on bread board and testing them.
