National Webinar

The Department of English of SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Autonomous, Sion (W) organized a National Webinar -"Cultural Trauma, Biopolitics and Precarious Lives in the 21st Century" by Dr. Pramod K. Nayar on 7th August, 2021. The event started at 4:50 p.m. and concluded at 6:30 p.m. in the evening and a total number of 244+ attendees participated in the webinar and 30+ people viewed the webinar on YouTube. Students, Professors and Research Scholars pan-India as well as across India actively participated in the event. Dr. Pramod K. Nayar, the speaker spoke about a specific form of cultural trauma connected with biopolitics i.e., Posthuman Trauma. Dr. Nayar explained the meanings of terms such as Cultural Trauma and Citizenship, Biopolitics, Eco Precarity, and Precarious Corporeality with the aid of a PowerPoint Presentation. He further elaborated his points by giving real-life and contemporary examples of books and movies. The second part of the event was a Q&A session with the speaker, students raised important and intriguing questions which were answered by Dr. Nayar. A vote of thanks was raised applauding everyone who contributed in making the National Webinar possible.

Essay Contest

30th January 2021, English Department

Under Value Lab activities, value for the month of January was ‘Leadership’. On 30th January 2021, an intra-collegiate essay writing competition on ‘Leadership’ was conducted. The essays were to be of 1000-1200 words and were scrutinized by Ms Vrushali Gupte and Dr Seema C, professors of Philosophy and English departments respectively. The winners were given certificates and their achievements mentioned on the Instagram handles of Value Lab and English Association.

• A 2-day seminar was organised by the Departments of Humanities on the 13th and 14th of December 2019, titled “Mapping Indian Diaspora”. Prominent speakers from various fields were invited for this seminar, who spoke about Diaspora and its international, cultural and political significance.

Title: Wordsworld- Poets Unite! Objective: To learn to appreciate poetry and the solace it gives in difficult times. Methodology: Guest lecture and poetry writing competition (online) Report: Dr Vidya Premkumar, a published poet and professor, rendered a lecture on ‘The Importance of Poetry in Current Times’ on 30th November 2020. She explained how poetry can become a form of solace for people and how it helps in facing mental health issues. Later, in the second part of the event, the results of the online poetry writing competition- ‘Courage in Adversity’ were declared. All the winners and the participants were given e-certificates. International Webinar on 'Spatial Anxieties and Estrangement'

An International Webinar on 'Spatial Anxieties and Estrangement During and Post Pandemic: An International Perspective' by Dr. Peter Cunningham, Prof Emeritus, Faculty, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, was organized by the Department of English and SIES Central Training on 30th June 2020. The welcome address was given by Dr. Lakshmi Muthukumar, Head, Department of English. Dr. Cunningham examined the effects of the lockdown and the anxieties and estrangements faced by people especially with regard to the intimate spaces they occupy. The Question and answer session after the talk was vibrant and informative. The session was moderated by Ms. Vidya Hariharan and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Seema C. The webinar was held as part of the celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee of SIES college of Arts, Science and Commerce (autonomous) Sion (W). More than a 100 students and staff of institutions all over India attended it.

On 18th April, 2021 Harsh Vikas Jain and Revathy Ramchandran won a National Debate Competition organised by The Art Hub Community. Thereafter separately, they wrote an article for their National Magazine AAKAAR Edition 2 on the Indian education in Arts, Post Indias Independence, including a detailed and elaborate blog too for their webiste. On 18th December, 2021, at the launch ceremony of the magazine they were called as the Chief Guests, they unveiled the magazine and did an autograph of theirs on the articles they wrote which will now go for a donation/charity.

Aleena Ausaf and Fareeha Kazi from SYBA English Literature won the first prize and the gold medal in the Intercollegiate Research Paper Presentation Competition organized under the aegis of Jignyasa - the Research Hub of the college on 8th January 2020. The students were guided by Dr. Lakshmi Muthukumar and they presented a research poster on The Reading Interests of Post-Millenial Students in the Age Group of 18 to 20 years.
