Herbal Garden

The garden is about 1250 Sqft in area.

It has a display of about 150 plants species which include horticultural plants, medicinal plants, fernery, avenue trees, some fruit trees & a nursery.

Few exotic species like the Asoka, Neerbrahmi, Bromeliads, Vanilla, Selaginella, Pitcher plant, Ganoderma etc. adds to its biodiversity.

We conduct talks for the senior citizens and school children from the nearby schools to make them aware about clean & green environment & to learn to care & nurture nature.

The horticulture students regularly visit the garden as a part of their studies & perform various garden operations and also maintains it.

With the support of stree Shakti sanghatana we have initiated a zero waste programme in our college premises & successfully generated approximately 300kg of compost in the past 3 months time.We have sensitised our students & the locals about converting biodegradable waste into valuable compost.

Since there are no nurseries in Sion area we conduct sale of plants with subsidised price during the month of August so as to generate interest among common man thereby leading to increase in green cover.

Zero Waste Campus

As we are progressing towards more urbanisation, we are generating higher quantities of waste. Each college campus generates considerable amount of dry and wet waste everyday. Waste is a resource at wrong place. By sending it to dumping ground, we are destroying National Resources. A decentralised waste handling solution overcomes these issues and is a step towards zero waste scenario. Initiative towards this has been taken by SIES college, Sion(w) in collaboration with Stree Mukti Sanghatana. This project is supported by United Nations Development Programme. A compost pit of 5'×3'×2' size has been installed at the back side of the college canteen. The inauguration of the compost pit was done on 15th August 2014 by the Principal. Since then, the canteen food waste (approx.30 kg.per day )as well as the horticulture waste generated in the college premises is being processed daily & on 5th November 2014, approx.100 kg. of compost was produced.

The aim behind the implementation of the project is manifold :

  • To spread the message of segregation.
  • To divert the waste from dumping ground.
  • To convert waste into wealth.
  • To restore nature's resources.
  • To replicate in other premises.

Zero Carbon Footprint

The college in collaboration with Stree Mukti Sanghatana has started a Green initiative to REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE with RESPONSIBILITY. College has taken up an Organic Manure production program wherein the food waste from canteen and horticulture waste from College surrounding has now been converted to Organic manure. The program has been initiated from 15th August 2014, and by now the college has converted approximately 2 ½ ton of biodegradable waste and has reaped around 200 Kg of wet organic manure. The dry weight accounting upto 120 Kg organic manure amounting to Rs. 2500/-.Through this initiative the college has saved this huge quantity of waste from going to dumping ground. Hence it has saved Natural resource and National wealth. The same project has been replicated at Kawthewadi, the adopted village at Karjat, Maharashtra. College has also initiated e-waste collection and recycling in collaboration with Stree Mukti Sanghatana. This e-waste is one of the most toxic and hazardous waste also responsible for fires at dumping grounds releasing toxic gases. With the help of NSS program the students of the college have till date collected approximately 100 Kg of e-waste. Through this initiative college has reached masses and saved toxic and hazardous waste reaching dumping grounds. By saving this e-waste going to dumping ground it has also reduced water and air pollution as these e-waste leaches in water and generates toxic waste. These are some of the innovative and eco-friendly initiatives that college has started and look forward for plenty more. In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint the college is going Green.
